Trouble. That was the first thing that came to mind when he assessed Tom’s sister, Sienna. A pale scrap of a woman with long, fiery red hair, she had dressed as if she intended to party hard on the news that Tom had left her a great deal of money, together with Tom’s substantial landholding on an island off the coast of Spain—an island Alejandro owned half of. He had successfully avoided feeling anything for years, but Tom’s death had opened old wounds that threatened his control in front of this woman.

Returning his attention to the solicitor, who had just asked them both to please sit for the reading of a letter from Tom, he informed the man, ‘I’ll remain standing.’

He had to hide his shock as the solicitor read on. The contents of Tom’s will had been bad enough, and, in fairness, Tom’s sister appeared equally perplexed as she listened to the contents of the letter.

Alejandro, I’d trust you with my life, but don’t mess with my sister.

Was he to take that as a challenge from the grave? It was followed by some mush for Sienna, along the lines of: I’ll always love you, and all I ask is that you follow your dreams.

There were tears in Sienna’s eyes. She needn’t worry. Tom could have spared himself the trouble of writing those words. Snagged black stockings, a too tight skirt, teamed with a garish, sequined top, brought only one thought to Alejandro’s mind: ‘Not a chance.’ In fact, he found it incredible that, thanks to the terms of Tom’s will, he now owned the island he loved jointly with this woman. And there was more to it than that. Tom had got lucky on the stock market, and had wanted to do something useful with the money. They’d come up with the idea of building a rehabilitation centre for veterans on the island. Alejandro had been delighted that Tom had seized upon this idea, as he’d hoped they’d found something at last to save Tom.

That project would still happen, he silently pledged. Nothing and no one would stand in his way. A living testament to Tom would still be built.

And Sienna? What would she have to say about it?

Life was full of challenges. She was just one more.

As if reading his thoughts, she glanced up. Challenge flared in her eyes. He was instantly suspicious. What was she up to? His body didn’t care, and responded with enthusiasm to the defiance in her steady gaze. Naturally, his mind overruled his body. She simply wasn’t his type. Tom had described his sister as zany and fun, though she could be stubborn, Tom had excused. From what Alejandro had seen, Sienna Slater was unpredictable and bold, which could be a problem. When he’d asked Tom where she worked, Tom had been evasive. ‘She works in a club,’ Tom had said. ‘Tells me she has a really big secret to share with me very soon.’ Tom had laughed rather awkwardly as he’d said this, adding, ‘I hope she hasn’t got herself pregnant.
